Why I Love My Menses

Updated: Jul 7

Love Your Menses: Boston, MA | May 25, 2019

Cramps. Heavy Bleeding. Diarrhea. Bloating. Hot flashes. Occasional vomiting. Missed days at work and school. You may be wondering: "Why are you sharing this with the world?" Truth be told, I have never been ashamed to talk about my period to family, friends, or even coworkers. Why? Because menstruation is normal vaginal bleeding that occurs once a month (for me) and I should not be afraid to talk about it. Despite my openness, I understand that not everyone feels comfortable talking about menstruation or hearing the words "cramps" and "period." No matter what your comfort level may be, menstruation matters to all and we need YOU in this movement to ensure every menstruator has the education and resources they need in order to have healthy menstrual cycles.

In response to the stigma (shame) associated with menstruation and the lack of education and equitable resources available to our young womxn of color, I decided to create Love Your Menses (LYM). LYM is a platform designed specifically with Black and Brown girls, young women, and those who menstruate in mind.

"Love Your Menses: to be in tune with your menstrual cycle, to advocate for equitable resources & safe spaces to menstruate, to support other menstruators, and most importantly, to flow through life unapologetically."

While we may each have a different menstrual experience, pleasant or unpleasant, I encourage you to love your menses. To "love your menses" means: to be in tune with your menstrual cycle, to advocate for equitable resources & safe spaces to menstruate, to support other menstruators, and most importantly, to flow through life unapologetically. Menstruation is not a disease; it is natural. Therefore, our conversations around this topic should be natural and unfiltered.

Do you have a period story you want to share? I invite you to share your truth in whatever way speaks to you, be it prose, poetry, artwork, or another form of expression. We have created a safe, blog space for people to share the ups and downs of their menstrual experience, from that very first period, to the very last, and every moment in between. We welcome you to our space as we all strive to flow through life, unapologetically.
